According to Brian Blanchette, president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, the milestone highlights the acceleration of the Flight III program and the incorporation of enhanced capabilities into the fleet. DDG 128 represents the next generation of surface combatants, equipped with the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar, the second of the Flight III class, and the Aegis Baseline 10 combat system, designed to address threats throughout the 21st century.

Ingalls currently has four Flight III destroyers under construction and another seven in the early stages of pre-planning and material procurement. To increase production tempo and meet the growing demand of the U.S. Navy, the shipyard adopted a distributed shipbuilding initiative, expanding partnerships with other shipyards and manufacturers outside the company’s traditional labor market, with a focus on meeting schedules.

With the delivery of Ted Stevens (DDG 128), Ingalls has now delivered a total of 36 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to the U.S. Navy, including the first Flight III, USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). Currently under construction are the ships Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129), George M. Neal (DDG 131), Sam Nunn (DDG 133), and Thad Cochran (DDG 135). Advancing in pre-planning and material procurement are John F. Lehman (DDG 137), Telesforo Trinidad (DDG 139), Ernest E. Evans (DDG 141), Charles French (DDG 142), Richard J. Danzig (DDG 143), Intrepid (DDG 145), and Robert Kerrey (DDG 146).
